Interim Senior Vice President, Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Mass General Brigham

Dr. Carla Carten (she/her/hers), PhD, serves as our interim Chief Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Officer within the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I). Previously, Carla joined Mass General Brigham in February 2020 as the Executive Director, of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategy for the Office of DE&I. She has over twenty-five years of experience in the fields of strategic planning, diversity & inclusion, health equity and change management.

Dr. Carten has been responsible for leading Mass General Brigham’s four-part system-wide DE&I strategy that focuses on organization equity as well as the implementation of our workforce-focused priorities under the United Against Racism Strategy.  She leads the system-wide Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Council and she launched and leads the DE&I Community of Practice, an 80+ member system-wide working group consisting of employees that manage DE&I responsibilities within their role.

Prior to joining Mass General Brigham, she served as the Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion, and Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, UMass Medical School and Chief Diversity Officer, UMass Memorial Health Care System. Dr. Carten also developed and launched the Office of Diversity & Inclusion at the Cleveland Clinic in 2006. She created the strategic plan, structure and training programs for the Office of D&I’s launch.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, a Master of Science degree in Organizational Development and Analysis from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications, from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio.
